factoring

OpenStudy (anonymous):

write a four term polynomial that you can factor by grouping. factor your polynomial.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Hint: Start with three binomials. Multiply them together. Then you know for sure you can factor the resulting 3rd degree polynomial.

i still dont understand it though??? @mathstudent55

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The first step is to come up with a four term polynomial that is factorable. If you have a 4-term polynomial, the smallest degree you can have is 3rd degree. It'll be something similar to this: 3x^3 + 4x^2 - 2x + 5 Ok so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i think..

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Ok, the polynomial above is only a random example. I doubt it is factorable. Since now you know you need a third degree polynomial, there is a way to make sure it is factorable. Start by coming up with 3 first degree binomials at random. Then multiply them together. Then you k now the resulting 3rd degree polynomial is definitely factorable. Examples of first degree binomials are: x + 2, 2x - 1, 3x + 5, -2x + 5
