Need help assigning IUPAC names for these alcohols, having trouble naming these... this my first question on here, sorry if it's not asked in the right format. I didn't know how to attach a picture to my original question (if you know how to I would appreciate if you can explain how do that :)) so posted an image as reply.

Hey welcome to OpenStudy. I'll do what I can. So for alcohols you first assign the OH bond with the lowest bond number.
Thank you :)
lowest bond number? Do mean the lowest bonding chain number?
Oh yes that. Sorry I forgot the terms. I did this back in high school.
So just in case you need a guide, here's one of the many help sites on naming alcohols: http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/Organic_Chemistry/Alcohols/Nomenclature_of_Alcohols/Naming_Alcohols
Still a bit confused, but from what I'm able to get so far...for c it's 2-methanol, but it seems incorrect
Hmm. I see 4 carbons on the longest chain.
I mean, so it cannot be meth- as the prefix.
For C, the longest chain is 4 carbons, so the name will have propane in it. Then, you label which carbons have substituents, with the OH group getting priority. So, 2-hydroxy-3-methylbutane.
D has 4 carbons also and the OH is on the 2nd carbon. It's pretty much like the answer to C, but without a methyl on it.
Or is C, 3-methyl-2-butanol?
I think but- is the prefix for 4. So it will be 2-butanol. Then there is CH3 on the 3rd carbon so you add 3-methyl. The full name should be 3-methyl-2butanol. At this point I'm scared I'll make a mistake, so always look out if I do.
Oh yeah I left out a dash. It should be 3-methyl-2-butanol.
I agree wolfe8.
Alright then. So for d) your chain goes this way |dw:1398731541351:dw| Can you try naming it?
