The length of a rectangle is five times its width. If the perimeter is at most 96 centimeters, what is the greatest possible value for the width? 2w + 2 • (5w) ≤ 96

OpenStudy (evanhelps):

Greatest possible value for the width is 40.

OpenStudy (evanhelps):

Here's how I did it: The width is 5 times the length (the width is represented by w) and the perimeter is 96. So if you draw a rectangle and label the width 5w and the length w, and add them together, you get 12w=96.|dw:1398736103687:dw|

OpenStudy (evanhelps):

So solve the equation 12w=96, and you get w=8. So if w=8, and the width is equal to 5w, you multiply w by 5 and get 40.

OpenStudy (evanhelps):

To check it you can add 40+40+8+8=96
