@annas I get it now think you ( So its like a plus sign eh?
OpenStudy (phi):
no, it does not mean plus
it means, *multiply by itself that many times*
examples:
2^1 = 2
2^2 = 2*2 = 4
2^3 =2*2*2 = 8
and so on
OpenStudy (anonymous):
No, when you have a power it signifies to multiply by that power: 3^2=9
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Welcome :D
you can also call it exponential sign :)
OpenStudy (phi):
It was invented because people wanted a shorter way to write things like
8*8*8*8*8
that is 8 times itself 5 times, so they the short way to write it is
\[ 8^5 \]
or , if you are at a computer, 8^5
