OpenStudy (math2400):

is there a special way to solve x(t)=10t+4sint (x(t)=140) using your calculator? x(t)=10t+4sint=140 answer is t=13.6

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you can use newton method + calculator

OpenStudy (math2400):

could u explain? All I did was plug it in to my calc and then find where x equaled 140 so i got a rough estimate of 13.6ish

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if you're allowed to use calculator, thats fine right ?

OpenStudy (math2400):

yes but there isn't a faster way? cuz i like manually trace in my calc. I'm in parametric mode cuz that's the equ i have

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

try finding x intercepts of : `x(t) = 10t+4sint-140`

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

or may be find the intersection of below two curves : x(t) = 10t+4sint x(t) = 140

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

whichever is easy..

OpenStudy (math2400):

got it! Thank you!!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

np :) you dont wanto manually solve it is it ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if u dont wanto use scientific calculator, u can solve this using `newton's method + store calculator`

OpenStudy (math2400):

well I'm allowed to use a calc on this portion. It's a part of a free response from a calc BC ap test. They don't require us to solve it manually. If we did though wouldn't it take a lot of steps?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes eventhough newton's method is cool, it does take many steps and can be a pain lol

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

go wid the calc :)

OpenStudy (math2400):

haha TG for Calculators. Thanks again(:

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

np :)
