The Crusaders were better prepared for the hot weather and had an abundance of food and water supplies.
The First Crusade was a military expedition by Western Christianity to regain the the land of Jerusalem. It was successful because of the unity of the French and German military. As a result Christianity was spread in a violent, militaristic manner and new areas of possible trade turned into new areas of conquest and bloodshed. Most of the armies sent by Pope Urban II to reclaim the Holy Lands from Muslim rule understood that the primary goal was to reclaim Jerusalem. In that light the First Crusade was considered successful as the Christians took over Jerusalem but they massacred everyone in the city. Also the Muslims were ill-prepared and the French contingent of the Christian army were viewed as a strong attacking force against the Muslims.
