Solve the following proportion.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ a }{ 3 }=\frac{ 4 }{ 14 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Hero , Is the answer, 6/7?

hero (hero):

How'd you come up with that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I multiplied both sides by 3 & was left with \[a=\frac{ 4 }{ 14 }(3)\] then used this website to simplify it & that was the answer it gave me.

hero (hero):

I see. Well, that is a good approach, but now I realize there is something I forgot to tell you. The first step is always to simplify first before doing anything.

hero (hero):

When you simplify first when approaching a algebraic problem, it often helps you see things more clearly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If I simplify 4/14, it's 2/7

hero (hero):

Yes, and then you can multiply both sides by 3 to get 6/7

hero (hero):

Either way, you got 6/7 which is the correct answer, but when you're dealing with bigger numbers, simplification can be vital.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I just multiply the numerator by 3 & the denominator stays the same?
