alright the way you can tell is by writing out the electron configuration and the elements that have their last electron subshell filled up for example an easy one is He 1s^2 its last subshell is fully filled so therefore it is diamagnetic as opposed to Li which has an electron config of 1s^2 2s^1 leaving the last subshell unfilled meaning its paramagnetic. Something that is important about this is that paramagnetic elements are strongly affected by magnetic fields and this becomes important in later sciences. Hope this helped.
