What is the difference between allosteric inhibition and competitive inhibition?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so do you have any idea about competitive inhibition?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

"allo-" means "other" or "different" allosteric means "different place" in reference to the active site of the enzyme. So an allosteric inhibitor works by binding to a location on the enzyme that is \(not\) the active site, in contrast, competitive inhibitors compete with the substrate because they, too, bind to the active site.
