) A table resting on the floor pushes downward on the floor. The floor likewise pushes upward on the table True or false

OpenStudy (anonymous):

TI think true, because of Newtons third law? But like...... Whats the upwords force called?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I ment to say True not TI!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's just the equal and opposite force.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok and if the floor did not push upwards the table would be considered a falling object???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep. The force of the ground pushing upward on the table is called the "normal force." And you're absolutely correct. If the floor didn't push upwards, the table would be falling :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right! The table pushes back up. Otherwise the table and everything else would plummet to the center of the earth.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thanks! Would it be possible for there to be weight on the floor without the floor pushing up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry, the floor pushes back up onto the table, because the table pushes onto the floor.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nvm I looked at your attachment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And relized how stupid my question was lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's not stupid :) I'm in college physics, and I barely get this stuff.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, "weight" is actually a measure of the normal force, rather than the force being applied to the object. However, if you're asking if we can apply a force with a force being returned, no. This violates Newton's Laws.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yeah i'm in 7th grade....... and my school is making me take physics..... and calc..... not fun

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thats what I thought...... just not sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wish I had gotten to take that stuff in 7th grade. My high school didn't even have calc. Had to learn it as I was learning physics in college :) It'll pay off later in life. Keep it up!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wish I had taken Calc and Physics early on. Trust me, it pays off to do it early. I'm in Calc 3 / Physics II right now, and it's not any easier. There's way more of an expectation from you when you get to college, and it's just as difficult as it is for you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:) Thank you guys, can I ask you one more question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, ask away

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Friction provides the force which "pushes" a car forward as it accelerates down the road. (Assume a flat road.) T or F Ok so like I understand that to excelerate a object you need external force (as far as I know), but would friction do this??? Im not clear one the friction concept..... like i know it means resistance but I forget????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Friction always opposes motion. So it won't push a car forward.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok..... lol were you the girl that answered all of my questions last night????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I may have answered questions, but I'm not a girl, haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh i'm sorry, :(( :(( :(( :(( Well thanks.. omg its 11 i gtg!
