Help Please Will Give Medal! Which Venn diagram is NOT correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hold on im getting the graphs :)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Do you understand what makes a Venn diagram correct or incorrect?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The outer circle contains the more general term. The inner circle contains the more specific term.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

I'll tell you right away the first diagram is correct. I'll use it to explain it to you.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

|dw:1399325594348:dw|

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Once again, this Venn diagram is correct.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

What this Venn diagram shows is that out of all parallelograms (contained in the larger circle) only some are also rhombuses (contained in the smaller circle).

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You can think of it this way. Every rhombus is inside the rhombus circle and inside the parallelogram circle. That means every rhombus is also a parallelogram. Every parallelogram is not necessarily a rhombus.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Now you need to go through each Venn diagram and ask yourself: Is every [thing in inner circle} also a [thing in outer circle]? If the answer is yes, the Venn diagram is true. If the answer is no, the Venn diagram is false.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Let's do the first one: Is every [thing in inner circle} also a [thing in outer circle]? First Venn diagram has rhombus & parallelogram. Is every RHOMBUS also a PARALLELOGRAM? Answer is yes, so the first Venn diagram is true.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Now you do the same to the other 3. One question will have an answer of no. That's the one that has a false Venn diagram.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the 2 one is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait sorry not the second one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the 3 and 4th one are correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathstudent55

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

B. Is every kite a quadrilateral? Yes. B is correct.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

C. Is every square a rhombus? Yes. C is correct.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

D. Is every rectangle a square? |dw:1399327138499:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha no :P

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

That means this is the Venn diagram that is incorrect. For it to be correct, it would have to be: |dw:1399327248427:dw|

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Since it's the opposite, it's incorrect.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK thank you! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you help me with something else?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

No, sorry, gtg. If I'm on some other time, I'll try to help. Also if you tag me, I'll try to help and you can see my answer when you get back.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks for the help anyway! :)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You're welcome.
