investiture has nothing to do with the Crusades or the Reformation. So did the struggle weaken or strengthen the emperors? The struggle was between Henry IV a king and Gregory VII a pope. So head of state vs. head of church. Both gave it there best shot to have the other guy excommunicated. Henry lost support of his nobles and had to humiliate himself and admit that the Pope had more power. Pope wins, Emperor is weakened. Looks like a great example of why separation of church and state is a good idea.
