@AravindG Help request, may take a while.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm working in heavy polynomial crap o3e halp.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ready to start? this means factoring, all tons of crap that I am bad at atm. please help pls

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first- tell me what factoring completely means, that's where I need to begin with. help me!

OpenStudy (aravindg):

For example. Take the equation x^2-5x+6=0 We can write it as (x-3)(x-2)=0 This means either (x-3)=0 or (x-2)=0 Better said x=2 or x=3 Terms (x-3) and (x-4) are called factors. And the method of writing it like that is called factorization.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wel, how would 2x^2 + 14x + 12 factor completely?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

First make x coefficient unity.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm only in 8th grade algebra... I don't know the term... "unity"

OpenStudy (aravindg):

You could take 2 common outside.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

unity means 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, x with a coefficient of 1, or 1x, or x?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

2(x^2+7x+6)=0

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Now we can factorize x^2+7x+6 Keeping 2 aside.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so we use foil now?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

foil?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

FOIL first outer inner last the method for multiplying binomials, and also how you would get the original number from factorization

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but should we use it in reverse instead of to check?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

First look at x^2+7x+6 forget the 2 outside. To factorize this think of 2 numbers that add to 7 and when multiplied gives 6.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 and 6?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Yep so factorized form is (x+1)(x+6)

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Now bring the 2 back so final answer is 2(x+1)(x+6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay... I know this solution, but i want to know why... 2x^3 – 32x factored completely to 2x(x + 4)(x – 4)

OpenStudy (aravindg):

2x^3 – 32x Take 2x common from both terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but why is there no x^2 terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why is there no -16?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

first tell me what u get after taking 2x common.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??

OpenStudy (aravindg):

2x^3 – 32x =2x(something) what is something?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x(-32x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@AravindG I'm back... hello? was I right? I will be on/off though... help?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Nope 2x(x-16)

OpenStudy (aravindg):

2x(x^2-16)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hm...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will be active on this on/off today so... yeah...

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Sorry I gtg now. 2x^3 – 32x=2x(x^2-16)=2x(x-4)(x+4) That is how its done.
