Can someone please help me with logarithms??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have the question "What is the logarithmic form of the equation e^3x ≈ 3247?" but I don't know what e is supposed to mean.

@phi

OpenStudy (phi):

e is a letter that stands for a famous number. But (like pi) this number goes on forever see http://www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/HistTopics/e_10000.html for some of its digits. Because it goes on forever, it is inaccurate to just write a few of the digits. Instead, people gave it a name "e'"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait I'm pretty sure e equals 2.7182818, the natural log (ln)

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, 2.718281828 is only the first few digits of e... and e is the base for the natural log

OpenStudy (phi):

for you problem, take the natural log of both sides of the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so the answer would be ln 3247 = 3x

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks! are you going to be on for a while? I may have more questions, because I'm struggling with this module and you explain everything a lot better than the "help" videos my teacher sent me when I asked her....

OpenStudy (phi):

You can tag me if I'm not on... I'll (mostly) be near the computer. But, yes, logs are confusing, more confusing than most things in math.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!
