medals for those with good answer 1-what is a ligands? 2-why scandium and zinc not a transition metal

mathslover (mathslover):

1 - "Ligands are ions or neutral molecules that bond to a central metal atom or ion" Learn more about Ligands - http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/Inorganic_Chemistry/Coordination_Chemistry/Ligands 2 - Transition elements are those elements who have valence electrons in the d-orbital and that d-orbital must be involved in bonding. Zinc and Scandium have valence electrons in d-orbital but their electrons in d-orbital are not involved in bonding so they are not considered as transition elements.
