help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which value for slope represents the steepest line? Negative twelve-fifths or negative three or negative two-thirds or negative one i dont reall get which one it is so if someone could help that be great

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm???????? i have no idea what that means

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is the steepest ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o wait i see it i think its the first one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think the second one ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so if its the second one would the answer be -3 ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well done :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be -3 because its the steepest one down the y axis ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if thats not why its -3 can u explain how u got that tho

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the formula / equation for a line is y = m . x + b where m is the slope, i.e. how steep it is and in which direction is it sloping - left or right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll draw a few scenarios so u can understand m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks so much for doing this

|dw:1399805545093:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the higher the positive m is the bigger the slope is and also the smaller the negative m is then the bigger the slope is, yoiu know that -5 is smaller than -2, so makes sense why we say the " smaller the negative m is "

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay and -2 is bigger than -5 because -2 is steeper right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2 is bigger than -5 but -5 is steeper ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i get it now that's why are answer is -3 and not -1 wow man thanks soooo much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

picture it like this if m = -2 and x = 5 then y = -10, right? now if m = -5 and x = 5, then y = -25, so see the big difference between y = -10 and -25, this is where the steepness comes into play, it the steeper the line is the bigger the change in Y is :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay that makes perfect since i totally get it now thanks man

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cool, dude :) good luck
