Does anyone knows what this compound name called? C2O4H2.2H2O My teacher calls it oxalic but i thought oxalic is COOH?

OpenStudy (gebooors):

It is oxalic acid with two crystal water. Oxalic acid has two -COOH group. It can be written as HOOC - COOH

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aaah... okay... umm so the H20 signifies theres water within this oxalic acid and it in crystal form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It means that for every molecule of oxalic acid in a crystal of that compound there will also be two water molecules, they're not bonded to any part of the oxalic acid but it just notes their presence in the crystal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not bonded but it's there.. that's more simple . sorry for asking more questions but is there any other reason why the water is there? does it affect the oxalic acid, or signifies anything about it solubillity?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

It just means that the molecule is hydrated.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

If you heat it that water will be lost.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For the majority of cases it has no real effect, it just needs to be considered when calculating the molar mass of the crystaline solid. It does change the chemical properties of a few compounds, the only one that comes to mind is rhodium(III) chloride

okay... thank you sillent ... that helps a lot :D wish you were my chem teacher :D

thank you to you AravindG
