An alkane with a molecular formula of C8H18 reacts with chlorine in the presence of light and heat to give a single monochloride C8H17Cl. What is the most reasonable structure for the starting alkane?

an aliphatic (straight chain) of carbons. Reason 1: Starting molecule is saturated with hydrogen, and the number of hydrogens you should have in an aliphatic alkane is (Number of carbons) x 2 + 2 Reason 2: You have a single molecule as a product. That means that the reaction has to happen at either ends of the chain, and the molecule can't break in two... That's all I can think of
