Ann and Betty shared a sum of money in the ratio 2:3. Ann received $120. What was Betty's share?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

One way to approach this would be to count the number of parts in the ratio: It's 2 + 3 = 5. Then Ann's share is 2/5 of the total amount. Betty's is 3/5. Your job is to determine (1) the amount of $ that they split up, and (2) what Betty receives as her share. Let x = the amount the girls split up.

i don't understand

Tell me what you do understand and we'll continue from there. This is an algebra problem, so it's worthwhile to define a variable and then find its value. Let the total amount of $ be x. Please respond in any way you can with suggestions on how to solve this problem, even if you're not sure...my goal is to get you involved in the problem solution.
