What arguments were made against the Kansas- Nebraska Act, and why did the Kansas elections lead to escalating violence?
First question: some arguments against. The K-N act repealed the Missouri Compromise. The question of slavery in new states had been settled and was now being brought back into Congress. Even though it sounded like popular sovereignty, the act was intended to force slavery into new territories
Many people who settled in Kansas came for Missouri, a slave state. Many other Missouri residents came in to Kansas during elections to vote for slavery. Many abolitionists moved to Missouri to help in the effort to keep in free. John Brown and his sons got into the act by coming over to murder 5 pro slavery farmers. There was lots of unrest in the territorial capital. The territorial governors were ineffective in keeping the peace. They were usually pro-slavery. The whole nation became involved in the struggle. The Missouri Compromise had been nullified and the threat of expanding slavery was back. The Whig party fell apart over the K-N act. The Republican Party was formed in response to the Democratic attempt to expand slavery.
