You need to isolate the numbers inside the radical. You can do this by adding 1 to the other side of the equation. \[\sqrt{x + 5} = 3\] Then you would square both sides. Squaring cancels out the radical on the left side. \[x+5 = 3^{2}\]

Okay so x+5=9 subtract 5 from each side.. so x= 4 correct?
