why is a voltmeter always connected in parallel?

OpenStudy (sidsiddhartha):

first let there is a resistor|dw:1400396224642:dw| ok so here A and B are two diffrent points and when u are going to measure voltage diffrerence or potential diffrence across the two points of the resistor then u have to connect it like this |dw:1400396373315:dw| if u dont connect it in this way i mean if u connect it in series then there are no 2 different points as you connect it on the same wire with same potential difference so voltage given by the meter will be zero
