explain what happens during a chemical reaction when energy is absorbed and is released

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@malloryhouse, how specific? In general terms, when energy is absorbed, chemical bonds are created, and when energy is released chemical bonds are broken.

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

He is refering to Exothermic and endothermic. Exothermic is a reaction that is releasing energy (Heat) Endothermic is a reaction that is absorbing energy (Heat) Most of these reactions are in chemistry but also thermodynamics.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@alphadxg Exothermic and endothermic are terms that describe a reaction. The question asked what happens during reactions. That is not the same as asking what term is used for a particular reaction type. I don't know exactly what he is asking. It could be for the names or it could be for the actual mechanics.
