Imagine you are an advisor for a sitting US president. You have just received word that three small boats appear to have attacked a US port. The president wants to retaliate, but you think more evidence is needed before US forces attack. What historical event could you reference to support your case best? A) North korean invasion of South Korea B) Gulf of Tonkin incident C) Attack on Pearl Harbor D) Launching of Sputnik E) firing of General MacArthur
well, the main issue here is uncertainty of whether the US port has indeed been attacked. The North Korean invasion of South Korea and the Attack on Pearl Harbor were both obvious attacks on the US, the Launching of Sputnik and firing of General MacArthur has nothing to do with this. The Gulf of Tonkin incident is a similar situation: US navy personnel thought they had been torpedoed by North Vietnamese, and this led to the sustained bombing of North Vietnam, starting the Vietnam War. And so you can use this incident to show how unproved accidents can to a massive and often tragic war like the Vietnam War.
B) Gulf of Tonkin incident
