Which sentence uses an elongated hyphen correctly? Frank went skiing–snowboarding–tubing last winter. Last weekend, Laurie applied for three jobs – at the mall. All three flavors–chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry–were sold out at the ice cream store. Alex–and–Jan are celebrating their mother’s birthday.

I think it is the third one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, it would be the third one if the hyphens had a space around them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So then which one would it be the hyphen doesn't have a space around it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ManImStumped could u help again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it is the 3rd 1 xStillFly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@xStillFly the rest are all wrong. There should be no hyphens in B or D, and I think A needs commas, not hyphens. C would be correct because "chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry" is an insert that doesn't need to be there, but has been added. If it was only one of them, it would have had commas around it only, since it would be an appositive phrase. But since there is more than one, the use of hyphens is needed. Hope that explained it :)
