can we liquefy gas by increasing temperature'

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

do u think u can ?

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

When you heat the solid its molecules receive more energy and eventually separate to form liquid and finally gas. So if you increase the pressure you are actually forcefully keeping them together so they will require more energy to separate. Conversely if you increase pressure on a gas it will liquefy and finally solidify. So increase i pressure causes increase in melting and boiling points and vice versa. So to liquefy gases two methods are used- firstly you can increase the pressure till it liquefies i.e increase the pressure till its boiling point is above ambient temp like it is done with LPG- Liquefied petroleum gas used for cooking or you can decrease its temperature bellow its boiling point. Or both can be used simultaneously. For further info refer any good book on Refrigeration and air conditioning. Short summary - Yes, increase pressure and decrease temperature (cool it)

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

Anything else?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

decrease pressure and increase temperature ? is this not possible ? @alphadxg his question is can we liquify by increasing the temperature

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

In that case, no to his answer, because Gases become more difficult to liquefy as the temperature increases because the kinetic energies of the particles that make up the gas also increase. The only way that you could do this, is like I explained above, the temperature has to stay constant and pressure has to be increased Correct Answer - can we liquefy gas by increasing temperature, no @chmvijay I think it's time for sleep lol, it's 2am -,-

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

ok u can sleep :) its 11.30 am here :) thanks for helping students in chem :) good night
