Have you ever wondered why your pipes smell sometimes? It's because this element is in your pipes, has lots of minerals and easily reacts with Oxygen and Carbon.

I think it is sulfur but I'm not sure. My friend thinks it's Benzene.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the only reasonable answer is sulfur however sulfur is a mineral not a gas ... sulfur is the only choice that is given that releases a scent. also it is not added to the gasses it is extracted with the fuels like oil and frac water drilled from the ground . Pure natural gas is colourless and odourless. This means if there is a leak people will not be able to detect it until it builds up enough to become explosive. For this reason a chemical called Mercaptan is added to the gas to make is smell. Mercaptan is harmless, non-toxic and has a strong "rotten egg" smell.

my dad works oil refineries and my mom was a tech in the field she studied all of this
