Thomas was a Dominican friar. I think that is the same as cleric; being affiliated with the church in some sort of position. Saladin was the Muslim emperor. Christians looked to his noble and chivalrous behavior as a role model for all Christians. Despite being a Muslim, he was, perhaps, more Christ-like than they were.
