Why does a heating curve have horizontal plateaus at certain points during the heating process? What is happening at those points?

at that points the substance that you r heating changes states

hope this helps you

OpenStudy (somy):

this is how it looks like basically saying from O to A is actually heating process meaning if its solid then bonds in solid start breaking from A to B here is the actual changing of state, so if we take solid as example then here solid is changing to liquid meaning melting starts from A to B

OpenStudy (somy):

same goes from B to C , the bonds now in liquid start breaking and from C to D is the actual change in state so evaporating meaning forming a gas

OpenStudy (somy):

so horizontal line represents change in state from solid to liquid or from liquid to gas etc thus this line represents processes such as Melting (from solid to liquid) or Freezing (from liquid to solid), Vaporization (from liquid to gas) or Condensation (from gas to liquid)

heating changes states
