What is 8C5?

OpenStudy (dan815):

8!/(5!*(8-5)!)

OpenStudy (dan815):

nCk = n!/((n-c)!c!)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.......@dan815

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ill try that tho thx any ways

OpenStudy (dan815):

yes, do you want to know where the formla is coming from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YESSS PLZZ

OpenStudy (dan815):

okay well 8 C 5 means 8 choose 5, we just want to choose 5, we dont care bout the order or anything, just if the 5 we are picking are different all the time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok....

OpenStudy (dan815):

if you remember from permutations to pick 5 from 8 that would be 8*7*6*5*4 however in this case the order matters to discount the order we think about how many different orders are there for 5 spots that is 5! so 8 Choose 5 = (8*7*6*5*4)/5! = 8!/(3!*5!)

OpenStudy (dan815):

dividing by 5! works because for any case in the permutations way like say A B C D E and E D C B A <---- this is the same in choose its the same 5 letters, there are 5! ways to arrange the same 5 letters so we just want 1 instance there are 5! times more cases than we need for each combination.. so we divide by 5!

OpenStudy (dan815):

I hope that makes sense

OpenStudy (dan815):

another way to think about it is 8 C 5 = (8 P 5 / 5!)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes that does...Thank you soo much

OpenStudy (dan815):

okay no problem!
