Hi. Can someone pls help me with this question? Thx When ice at 0 degrees Celsius is mixed with an equal mass of steam at 100 degrees Celsius, wat is the final temperature of the mixture & wat is the state of the mixture?
You have three calculations to make here: You know that mass of steam and ice are the same When ice melts it absorbs heat - BUT stays at 0 deg (enthalpy of fusion also known as (latent) heat of fusion) When steam condenses it 'releases energy (latent heat of vaporization (boiling). ) but stays at 100deg. If the energy realeased buy steam is MORE then the energy absorbed by the ice then the steam will heat the 'ice water' above 0deg If the energy released is less then thast absorbed then the ICE will cool the 'steam water' below 100 deg. You then have an equal mass of hot water and cold water (you need to calculate the actual temperatures) which mix. The total energy in the system remains the same at all times.
