(ie a hydrocarbon. other hydrocarbons are wax, petrol) It burns with a smoky flame to form carbon dioxide and water Word equation: Methane + oxygen ------> carbon dioxide and water, Alcohol will also burn to form carbon dioxide and water. These reactions are combustion reactions. CH4 + 2O2 ----> CO2 + 2H2O (Complete combustion, Only CO2 and Water are formed) CH4 + 1 and a half O2 ----> CO + 2H2O (Incomplete combustion where Carbon monoxide is formed) CH4 + O2 ----> C + 2H2O (Incomplete combustion where Carbon is formed)
