Describe the process of mechanical digestion (in the mouth and stomach).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I get mechanical digestion in the mouth

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the teeth and what not breaking down the food

OpenStudy (abhisar):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but not so much the stomach

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought it was all chemical digestion, since the stomach has stomach acid and stuff

OpenStudy (abhisar):

wall of stomach is made up of muscles which perform PERISTALSIS

OpenStudy (abhisar):

u knw the term ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm I think they used something that started with a b...oh it is bile....they said that has to do with mechanical digestion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in the stomach

OpenStudy (abhisar):

no no...bile is produced by liver and is released in small intestine...it is related with chemical digestion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but my teacher said it was mechanical...and when I took a quiz like 3 weeks ago it said the same thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not that it is made in the stomach but that the stomach uses it to aid in mechanical digestion

OpenStudy (abhisar):

no u must be mixing up things

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just pulled up the quiz and looked at it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok wait my bad...it aids in the digestion of fat in the stomach by means of mechanical digestion.... is that right?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

no thats wrong

OpenStudy (abhisar):

it aids digestion of fat in small intestine by means of chemical digestion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so it has nothing to do with the stomach?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Nopes...nothing to do with stomach....related to small intestine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh ok..well sorry for added confusion :/

OpenStudy (abhisar):

duodenum to be more precise

OpenStudy (abhisar):

no its okay...i think u cleared one of ur doubts

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it makes more sense...well that part at least

OpenStudy (abhisar):

if not satisfied u can chk the link below https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bile

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so u were saying something about PERISTALSIS....thats mechanical?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

yes Mechanical digestion is the physical division of a mass of food into smaller masses

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok...so would separating nutrients from the food and the bad stuff from the food count as mechanical as well?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

The mixing action of the stomach walls allows mechanical digestion to occur in the stomach. The smooth muscles of the stomach produce contractions known as mixing waves or Peristalsis (proper medical term)that mix the boluses of food with gastric juice. This mixing leads to the production of the thick liquid known as chyme.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh That explanation makes sense!....so basically the whole mixing motion is the mechanical digestion?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

yes..just converting bigger food particles into smaller by mixing and chewing

OpenStudy (abhisar):

chewing occurs in mouth..mixing in stomach

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got it!!! THANK U!!!!!! like a gazillion times!

OpenStudy (abhisar):

LOL..i even can not imagine how much it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it will help a lot! bye! :)
