Circles M and K are congruent, QR=LN and OP= VW. I need to find x and y

@Tommy389

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Since QR=LN, QR = x+y, and LN = 6, this means QR=LN x+y=6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

OP = VW 3x-y = VW ... plug in OP = 3x-y 3x-y = 10 ... plug in VW = 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok :)?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

We now have this system of equations x+y = 6 3x-y = 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Do you know how to solve that system?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really :( thats why I need your help!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If we add the equations, we get x+y = 6 3x-y = 10 --------- 4x+0y = 16 Notice how x+3x = 4x, y+(-y) = 0y, and 6+10 = 16

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

4x+0y = 16 4x+0 = 16 x = ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=4 :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now use that to find y

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

pick any equation with x,y in it say we pick x+y = 6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

plug in x = 4 and solve for y x+y = 6 4+y = 6 y = ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=2 :) :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANK YOU SO MUCHHH!! you saved mee!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would you please help me with a few more :)??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep x = 4,y = 2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I can do one more

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just give me a second to draw the circles

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure thing

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

take your time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Circles M and K are congruent, QR=LN and OP=VW. I need to find y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am stuck on this one :(

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Same idea as before QR = LN 2x = y+12 ------------ OP = VW 3x = 19+y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok :)?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

One way to solve is to first isolate y in 2x = y+12 to get 2x = y+12 2x-12 = y y = 2x - 12

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Then plug this into 3x = 19+y and solve for x 3x = 19+y 3x = 19+2x - 12 x = ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=7 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, 3(7)=19+2x-12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, 3(7)=19+2(7)-12?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x = 7 is correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now use this to find y y = 2x - 12 y = 2*7 - 12 y = 14 - 12 y = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANK YOU SO MUCHH!! ill let you go now, thank you so much, couldnt have done it without youu

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm sure you could have. I'm glad to be of help.
