What are some ways in which you can hook your readers in the introductory paragraph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You could start with a question or a statistic

Also include a thesis statement

@D.villasenor is correct. You can start with an *interesting* question or an interesting statistic. For example, when writing about things to do, you can say "What do you do when you're bored?" or "Ever been bored, not knowing what to do?" That was a question. Now for statistics, it would be something like this: "Did you know that 75% of kids that do nothing when they're born die faster?" That would be an interesting statistic that hooks in your readers, but obviously, your statistic needs to be true an dyou have to be ready to say where you found it out. You can also do some kind of onomatopoeia, such as BOOM, BAM. That would be great especially for narrative stories. There is also making the reader imagine something, like this: You're in your room, messy, dirty. You've listened to all your CDs, you're up to date with all your tv shows, everyone's sleeping. What the heck do I do?!" And then you go on with what to do when your bored, blah. c:
