What is the difference between a chlorophyte and a charophyte?

OpenStudy (koikkara):

They are the same thing and the Charophyceans or Charophyta (Coleochaete, Chara, Nitella) are the most representative group of immediate land plant ancestors. Hope If you Are Satisfied with Answer, Please Close this Question !!

This answer is actually not correct. Actually: chlorophyta and charophyta together make up the group of viridiplantae (green plants). But yet they are different. The main aspect of difference comes from the mechanics of cell division. While charophyta build a phragmoplast during division that works as a frame for the new cell wall, chlorophyta don't. This is also the reason why all higher plants descend from charophyta and not chlorophyta. The rest is quite similar, as koikkara pointed out. But they are NOT the same!
