Algebra slope question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Determine which function has the greater rate of change in problems 1−3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

find the slope for each, and see which one is bigger

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

pick 2 points for each and then find the slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay i know the slopes... but what does that have to do with the question?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

slope == rate of change

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i still dont get it

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

... ok... what do you find confusing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

math. LOL I mean, i think ik how to get slope. The slope for the first one -1, right? And the second one is 1? and the third one is 1/2? And the fourth is 2/3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jdoe0001

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well... I only see the 1st one... and its table I gather when one talks about the "slope" is really just referring to the "rate of change" that "y" is changing in relation to "x"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I still dont understand. AT ALL.

geerky42 (geerky42):

\(slope = \dfrac{rise}{run}\) |dw:1402438948525:dw|

geerky42 (geerky42):

Slope is how much y changes, depending on how x changes. Like for y = 2x, slope is 2 because when x changes from 1 to 2, y changes from 2 to 4. Seriously, I don't know how to explain anything simpler than that.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

lemme put it this way if you and your sister start walking and she moves faster than you so when you walked 1 mile, she has already walked for 2 miles when you walked 2 miles, she has alreadyi walked 4 miles so... what would be the "rate of change" that is, the difference in walking speed between you and your sister? the rate of the change from one mile to the next and so on well let's see you = x sister=y x=1 y = 2 x=2 y =4 what's the rate of change? well will be the slope of the points (1,2) and (2,4) or 2 what does that mean? it means the rate of change of your sister would be 2 in relation to your speed meaning she's twice as fast walking

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SO whats the answer?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well. the "greater rate of change" look at the slopes you got, the "greater slope" then
