A metallurgist makes an alloy of iron and carbon and finds that the alloy is less ductile than pure iron. Which reason best explains the reduced ductility of the alloy? Iron atoms have lost some of their freedom to slide over other atoms. The atomic size of an iron atom is smaller than the atomic size of a carbon atom. The number of free-flowing electrons in the crystal lattice has increased. Electrons in the alloy are more freely oscillating between energy orbitals.
