What is the greatest common factor of 54 and 72? A. 2 B. 3 C. 9 D. 18

zepdrix (zepdrix):

72 is ummm 9 times 8. Breaking it into it's prime factors \(\Large\rm 2\cdot2\cdot2\cdot3\cdot3\) 54 is uhhhh 9 times 6 yah? it's prime factors are \(\Large\rm 3\cdot3\cdot3\cdot2\) Soooo what is the greatest number of 3's that they both have? and the greatest number of 2's also?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 15

zepdrix (zepdrix):

\[\Large\rm 54=\color{red}{3\cdot3}\cdot3\cdot\color{red}{2}\]\[\Large\rm 72=\color{red}{2}\cdot2\cdot2\cdot\color{red}{3\cdot3}\]They each have two threes and one 2 in common, yes?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So that would be the greatest common factor:\[\Large\rm \color{red}{3\cdot3\cdot2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

18

zepdrix (zepdrix):

yay good job \c:/ I hope that explanation makes some sense.
