How are participles and gerunds similar and different?

OpenStudy (clalgee):

Similarities: Gerunds and participles both come from verbs. Differences: Gerund: Well, a gerund is a verbal noun. Which basically means it stands alone in the sentence. In this case, a gerund always end with an 'ing'. (Like walking, sleeping, swimming, etc) Participle: Well, s participle is a verbal adjective. Which basically means, it describes something else in the sentence. Participles end with an -en (Ex: fallen), -t (Ex: slept), or even -ing (thinking) *Notice that the -ing ending can either ber a gerund or participle. In order to find out if it is a gerund or participle is by checking whether the word describes something else. I hope I helped! Sorry if I wrote so much!
