Why does wrapping a bottled beverage in a wet cloth at a picnic often produce a cooler bottle than placing the bottle in a bucket of cold water? @Abhisar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

beacuse the wet cloth acts as a barrier against outside heat and therefore drops the temperature of what is inside the bottle and cools things down. faster than putting it inside a bucket of ice water because when you put it inside a bucket of ice water the ice water is also trying to stay cold itself because the ice is melting and the ice is trying to keep the water cold

OpenStudy (abhisar):

The cloth provides an increased surface which causes increased evaporation of water. Evaporation requires energy, and thus absorbs the heat from bottle. This keeps the bottle cooler.
