What could be the oxidation numbers for each atom that makes up the compound MgBr2? A.Mg is +1; Br is –1. B.Mg is +1; Br is –2. C.Mg is +2; Br is –1. D.Mg is +2; Br is –2.

OpenStudy (lena772):

In MgBr2, Br has the oxidation state of -1

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Mg is an alkaline earth metal so we know it must have a +2 oxidization number and Br is a halogen is its a -1*2 because we have 2 atoms of Br so our choice would be Mg +2 Br -1

OpenStudy (lena772):

Mg has a state of +2. So C is your answer.
