Solve the inequality y plus eight is less than negative thirty-two.

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Firstly, let's set this up as an equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y + 8 > -32...it could be many things.

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

True, that's why you graph it. Graphing it involves showing how it's an infinite answer.

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Firstly, solve for y. What's the first step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answers they give are: y > -40, y < -40, y < -24, y > -24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

> = less than ?

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

That's "greater than". Please try to answer my question, though, if you can, what's y less than here? How do we isolate y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wasn't taught how...thats why I take a virtual class. My teacher never taught us

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Ah, ok. For simplicity, let's pretend the less than symbol is actually an equals sign. In these equations, where you want to isolate (aka "solve for...") a variable, you need to get rid of other values acting upon it, by doing the opposite upon them to move them. NOTE: what is done to one side must be done to the other(s). For example:

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

|dw:1403295225105:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20-5=15...sooo -32+8= -24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-24 would be greater than -32 because it's closer to being a positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y > -24

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

No, you forget that the example I used had a value being ADDED to the variable to start, not subtracted, as yours is. Subtraction is done as so:

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

|dw:1403295695203:dw|

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

And, for future reference, this is how you do multiplication/division, which are opposites.

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

|dw:1403295906465:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I do. :) So lets just say x-6=21, x-6+6+21+6

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Yep! And therefore x=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

27

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Yep! So how do you do your actual problem? What does y equal?

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Sorry, not equal, I should have said "less than"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y+8=32, y+8-8-32-8= 40

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

I'm afraid you've got the original problem written incorrectly. It should be "y+8>-32"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh woooow. Hmm...y+8>-32, y+8-8--32-8= y > -40?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no no no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-24

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

The first answer was right, just make sure to include the ">" in your steps.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y > -40?

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Yep! Now, do you have any experience with graphing variables like this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Experience...no, I don't think so..maybe now because you taught me

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Haha, alright then! Let's start by making a coordinate plane. Can you make a rough one for me using "draw"?

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Don't worry about marks denoting values yet, just draw the two lines please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1403300279352:dw| this kind of graph?
