What is the charge on one chlorine in BeCl2

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

If you look at the Periodic Table you will notice Beryllium is an Alkaline Earth Metal this means it has a +2 oxidization state. We know that Cl is a halogen and we have 2 Chlorine for every 1 Beryllium so what must the oxidization number be?

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Does this make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kind of would it be -1 I'm doing chemistry online and I have to teach myself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oxidization is ???

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

yes the charge on the Cl would be -1

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

ignore oxidization number if you haven't gotten to it yet
