5>-3x-1
First you have to isolate x. Do you know how to do that?
I call dibs precious32. o.o
lol go ahead
Welcome to OpenStudy @mkiby! :)
5>-3x-1 To isolate x, add 1 to both sides. 5 + 1>-3x Now you combine like terms. 6 > -3x Then divide both sides by -3 to remove the -3 from x. -2 > x
> = < are all just comparisons. You can treat them the same way.
Don't forget that when you divide by a negative number, your inequality sign flips. So in this case the answer would be -2<x and not -2>x
Thank you. Thats what I came up with but it was marked wrong and the answer they wanted was -2<x
marissa figured that out. Sorry, at least now I know. :D
Got it. Now I see it
Give her a medal.
x<-2
It can be a tricky rule you forget about, but in inequalities if you have to divide by a negative number to solve for x, you just flip your sign :) I hope you enjoy your future time on OpenStudy! @mkiby
