Determine whether the given measures can be the lengths of the sides of a triangle. Write yes or no. Explain. 6, 9, 16

OpenStudy (sidsiddhartha):

general rule is Each PAIR of sides must have a sum that is GREATER than the 3rd side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sidsiddhartha so i would have to add 6+9?

OpenStudy (sidsiddhartha):

yup addition of 6 and 9 produces 15 which is less than the third side16 so triangle is not possible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sidsiddhartha so i always have to add the first two numbers?

OpenStudy (sidsiddhartha):

yes

OpenStudy (sidsiddhartha):

if the addition is greater than third side then triangle will be possible take this example 2,3,4 so first two sides are 2 and 3 2+3=5 and it is greater than 4 so in this case triangle will be possible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe you have to check all three combinations, since the theorem states " The sum of any two sides of a triangle is greater than the length of the third side.
