The asters synthesize and extend polymeric spindle fibers in a dividing cell. These spindle fibers are like long chains that extend through the cytoplasm, and polymerize until they extend far enough to attach to the centromeres of diad chromosomes (at kinetochores). Once attached, centromeres replicate and the fibers then recede back to the asters, splitting the diads apart and each monad chromosome then travels to opposite ends of the cell to provide a full chromosomal package to the newly formed daughter cell after division is complete.
