It may or may not be an error to fail to capitalize "south." It is not capitalized when it means only some area to the south of another. When it refers to a recognized region, as it often does in the US, it should be capitalized. Likewise, speaking internationally, "East" and "West" sometimes refer to groups of country with particular political, economic, or cultural alignments. Some places in the West are geographically east of some places in the East. Greece, generally considered part of the West is actually east of Albania which is or was often considered as part of the East. So it depends on where the Australian is from in this sentence. Is she or he from the southern part of Australia? Is that part customarily called "The South"? Or does it mean that she or he has more recently been residing in a part of the US customarily called the South?
