Urban II was attempting to end a turbulent period in the Church's history by reconciling Christian princes and thereby unify the Catholic world. A request from the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus for Western European mercenaries to assist in driving the Seljuk Turks from Asia Minor was seized upon by Urban as a chance to take back the Holy Land from its Muslim rulers. Part of his speech to the assembled crowds at Clermont is reproduced here; "Let them turn their weapons dripping with the blood of their brothers against the enemy of the Christian Faith. Let them - oppressors of orphans and widows, murderers and violaters of churches, robbers of the property of others, vultures drawn by the scent of battle - let them hasten, if they love their souls, under their captain Christ to the rescue of Sion." This was unexpectedly effective in rousing the princes of Europe to action, and before a year was out, armies of fanatical soldiers, as well as a few thousand peasants under the leadership of a charismatic preacher known as Peter the Hermit, were marching to Constantinople from all over Western Europe
