What happens if the amount of energy that is absorbed by the reactants is less than the activation energy

Interestingly, sometimes a reactant(s) can "go through" the (activation energy) hill to the other side (the products) by an effect known as "quantum tunneling". But that requires exotic conditions such as very cold temperatures I think.
